Effects of Rapid Weight Loss on Judo Athletes: A Systematic Review

2020

Rapid weight loss (RWL) is commonly practiced among judo athletes. Although it helps them to gain the advantage over their lighter opponents, previous studies have shown that RWL can have a negative impact on the athlete’s performance and overall well-being. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the evidence that examines the influence of rapid weight loss on physiological parameters, biomarkers, and psychological well-being in judo athletes. We followed the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines. We searched for studies on Web of Science and PubMed that elaborate on the influence of ≥5% RWL achieved over ≤7-day period in judokas. Out of 52 studie…

Sports analysis, training considerations and applied methods for mixed martial arts

2016

Introduction. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a combat sport and a form of martial art that combines striking and grappling skills. Due to there not being any restrictions between switching from striking to grappling, the sport requires multiple skill sets usually derived from different martial arts. This combined with the fact that MMA requires the athlete to be highly conditioned both from an endurance and strength and power standpoint, places very large challenges on how to optimally design training programs so that individual athletes get the most out of them (Schick et al. 2010, Lenetsky et al. 2012, Alm et al. 2013, Lachlan et al. 2013, Souza-Junior et al. 2015). Effects of Rapid Weight Loss on Kidney Function in Combat Sport Athletes

2021

Even though scientific literature shows numerous heath complications and performance decrements associated with rapid weight loss (RWL), its prevalence remains exceedingly high across various combat sports. The aim of this study was to thoroughly search the existing literature to explore the influence of RWL on kidney function in Olympic and non-Olympic combat sport athletes. PubMed and Web of Science were searched for the relevant studies. Only original articles published from 2005 onwards, written in English, that included healthy males and females who prompted ~5% weight loss within a week or less, were included in the study. Retrieved studies showed that creatinine, blood urea nitrogen …

Session-RPE for quantifying load of different youth taekwondo training sessions.

2016

BACKGROUND: The session rating of perceived exertion (session-RPE) proved to be a valuable method to quantify the internal training load (ITL) in taekwondo. However, no study validated this method in youth taekwondo athletes performing different training sessions. Thus this study aimed at evaluating the reliability of the session-RPE to monitor the ITL of prepubescent taekwondo athletes during pre-competitive (PC) and competitive (C) training sessions. METHODS: Five female (age: 12.0±0.7 y; height: 1.54±0.08 m; body mass: 48.8±7.3 kg) and four male (age: 12.0±0.8 yrs; height: 1.55±0.07 m; body mass: 47.3±5.3 kg) taekwondo athletes were monitored during 100 individual sessions (PC: N.=33; C:…

Influence of Vertical Dimension of Occlusion on Peak Force During Handgrip Tests in Athletes

2018

Background: In contact sports, such as martial arts, protection from oral injuries is generally recommended. Several authors have focused on the effects of wearing such oral protective gear on sports performances and, in particular, occlusal devices. Although many studies have shown improvements in athletic performance, especially in maximal isometric strength, to date there is still no consensus on the issue. Objectives: The aim of our study was to evaluate differences in isometric handgrip before and after the application of an occlusal splint (OS) in martial arts athletes. Methods: A repeated measures within-subjects design was adopted for the study. Twenty-five young martial arts athlet…

Fighting words : representations of dominant masculinity in the interviews of a mixed martial arts champion

2017

“I’m in a League of My Own”: A study on the rhetorical devices in Conor McGregor’s speeches

2018

Tämän lisääntyneen mediahuomion seurauksena, osa ottelijoista on alkanut ilmaisemaan itseään enemmän verbaalisesti haastattelutilaisuuksissa mainostaakseen otteluitaan. Tämän seurauksena haastatteluissa esiintyy erilaisia verbaalisia yhteenottoja, jotka sisältävät usein vastustajien taitojen väheksymistä sekä omien taitojensa suurentelua. Kaiken tämän kä…

Kendō vēsture un attīstība

2021

Bakalaura darba mērķis ir izpētīt japāņu cīņas mākslas kendō (剣道 kendō) vēsturi un to, kā tā attīstījās kopš pirmo zobenu cīņas mākslas kendžucu (剣術 kenjutsu) skolu rašanās brīža Muromači periodā (1336-1573) līdz mūsdienām. Bakalaura darbs sastāv no 3 daļām un 8 nodaļām. Pirmajā daļā tiks pētīta zobenu vēsture, pirmās kendžucu skolas un nozīmīgāko zobenu cīņas meistaru ietekme uz kendō attīstību. Otrā daļa ietvers laiku no Meidži perioda (1868-1912) līdz 2.pasaules karam.
